Darkest Shadows, introduction
Darkest Shadows
Chapter 1
Donovan slammed against the wall, grunting at the unexpected impact. His opponent stood in front of him, just out of sword reach, her eyes fixed on Donovan with the same look a wolf gives its prey. She was waiting, her sword held purposely low, baiting him into the attack. Donovan knew how that would turn out. He'd rush forward, she'd somehow manage a block and then counter faster than he could dodge and that would be the end. Instead, Donovan pushed off from the wall towards the girl, cautiously extending his own sword. The girl took a step back, maintaining the distance. Donovan jabbed his sword forward, feigning a lunge, and the girl's sword was up in an instant, swatting Donovan's blade away. Even with her sword low, her defense was solid. No big surprise there. The girl moved to strike back, but Donovan had never committed to his feint. He simply threw himself aside, avoiding her attack. Even so, Donovan felt the wind of the girl's blade as it slashed the

The Serpent and the Shackles
I am Severus, Dark Muse of Power. I am the first of my kind, and all who have come after me are my disciples. Of the nine Muses, I am second only to Madness. But in those days, when I made my oath, I was weak.
I was a mistake. When I was first summoned, the Serpents cut and tore my flesh with their knives, sent their poison coursing through my veins, and kept me sequestered in darkness, alone and in pain. All this they did in ritual, for I was to become one of them. Not just any of them, either, but one of their elites, a great demon in the form of a snake, a creature whose words and gaze were as venomous as its fangs. I was to be the bodyguard of their newborn princess, but they performed the ritual in haste. The Serpents stripped me of my natural power, but they failed to grant me theirs. I was left broken and useless, no stronger than any mortal, unfit to guard the princess. I could only serve at her feet.
Such was my fate for many a year. I was bound in

Chapter 2
The sun had just risen above the Academy walls as twenty teenagers and four soldiers convened in the Proving Grounds. Donovan joined the small mass of humanity somewhat hesitantly. These weren’t his people. These were the children of aristocrats and nobles, born into wealth and privilege. They had the best education and years of training already behind them. They knew everything from how to behave to how to handle a sword, and if they didn’t excel at all of it, they would never have been admitted into the Academy at all. Donovan, however, had been admitted as a special case. He had no education, no experience, and no talent. All he had was his name.
And now, on this field, that was going to become abundantly clear. As if he didn’t look stupid enough already.
Donovan was broken out of his spiral of depression by the arrival of Thomas Bane. Right, Tom was in his group. That was something, at least. The smaller boy qui

The Mirror
I am Veinyn’Rythin of the Mirror, demon of the 8th circle and Dark Muse of the Passions, and I am not who I say I am. I have Veinyn’Rythin’s body and memories, but I am not him. I am something different, and I hope, something more.
I remember Veinyn’Rythin walking down an arched hallway, sword in hand, thirsty for blood. He was a prince of Erebus, and he had just attacked another prince, Dakolin, who had stolen one of his concubines. Veinyn’Rythin’s armies assaulted Dakolin’s fortress, but Veinyn’Rythin himself had slipped in unnoticed. He had always been the sort to take matters into his own hands, and even though his opponent was far stronger than he was, Veinyn’Rythin was confident that he could assassinate his rival before Dakolin even noticed his presence. Perhaps, if Veinyn’Rythin was lucky, he might even add his Dakolin’s face to his collection.
A quartet of huge stone gargoyles moved to block Veinyn’Rythin

SHOUT IT OUT
We keep a lot of things bottled up inside, and sometimes it’s better to just shout it out.
“I’m insecure.”
“I sometimes make things up when people expect me to know what I’m talking about.”
“I bite my fingernails and my toenails.”
“I avoid saying people’s names because I can’t keep them straight.”
“Every song I hear runs through my head incessantly.”
“I worry about living up to my father’s success.”
“When I like something, I tend to obsess over it.”
“I read (yes, read) porn, but frankly, most of it is terrible. Sex without emotional connection is entertaining for all of about five seconds, and that's all most porn is.”
“1 c4n r173 f1u3n7 1337.”
“I wish I could draw, but I’m not dedicated enough to learn.”
“I’m a huge geek, but sometimes I really wish I wasn’t.”
“I’m a little bit bisexual.”
“I know grades don’

Donovan pulled on the formal suit and they had given him to wear to the ceremony. He had been surprised, to say the least, when an older student had delivered the outfit to him shortly after sunrise. He had known they’d expected him to dress up, of course, but this was just ridiculous. In the pure white suit, all the enemies he’d made over the years would be able to see him from miles away, and there was no way he could hide in something this flamboyant. What’s more, the suit’s long jacket could easily snag on a protruding window edge or be grabbed by a pursuer. At least cloaks also concealed their wearers. There was just no way the instructors at the Academy were stupid enough to make students wear this. Unless…
Unless it was a test. The uniform was so flamboyant because the Talon Guard had to make their presence known to the people, but they also needed to fight freely and even move without being seen fr

Prologue
The boy ran through the empty streets, the shouts of his pursuers all but drowned out by the sound of his feet smacking against wet flagstones. With each step, pain lanced through his body. His feet were blistered, and blood ran freely from his right foot, where a shard from a broken water jug had slashed his heel open two days earlier. His lungs burned and cried out for air, but the pain of a broken rib kept the boy’s breath shallow. His mind raced, flipping back and forth between blind panic and the desperate search for some way to lose his pursuers, some way to get away.
He swerved off the main street into a narrow alley, hoping to throw his pursuers off course. No good. Their shouts told the boy that he had been seen. He heard the whistle of something moving fast through the air behind him, and he ducked just in time for a heavy rock to sail past the place his head had been just moments before
The boy came out of the al

The Cathedral
The light upon the chapel floor does shine,
For stained glass window lets the sun's rays pass,
That they might come and brighten this great shrine,
So that the faithful might have light for mass.
At night this church becomes a darker place,
And deathly silence fills its now cold halls,
The moonlit gates take guise of demon's face,
As gargoyles perch upon the darkened walls.
This hallowed ground, once home to men and saints,
Now falls before the ravages of time,
As spires crumble, beams cry out complaint,
Its organ's notes to heav'n have ceased to climb.
Though ruined now, the church's mem'ry guides
All those who come to mourn their kin who've died.

Vendale isn’t a very big town. Everyone knows everyone else, at least by face, so things usually stay pretty peaceful. We get the occasional tavern brawl, and sometimes the kids do stupid shit like breaking windows or stealing jewelry, but in general things are pretty quiet here. Sometimes, though, the outside world comes knocking on your door, and excitement finds you, whether you want it to or not.
Trouble had actually been brewing for a long time now, but I didn’t see the signs, or chose to ignore them, until a young woman staggered into the Pauper’s Lens, her left side wet with her own blood. I rushed over to her, but she just growled and pushed past me. She made it about three steps toward the bar before colla

Ok, so that last spurt of writing didn't last very long. Finals hit, then Christmas, then video games took over my life, and now I'm back at College for the spring semester. In that time, I haven't made a lot of progress on my writing, but I've started up again. A spiritual successor to The Mirror, called The Serpent and the Shackles, is a proof-read away from being ready. Expect it to be posted in the next couple days, or even tonight, if I decide to procrastinate my work in favor or proof-reading.

On the subject of proof-reading, I'm still interested in getting an editor, so if anyone's interested (you know, either of the people reading my stuff), shoot me a PM. I would do a lot more writing if I had an editor, plus you'd get some say in the creative process, since half the job of an editor is to help the writer weed out bad ideas and find good ones.
